Ken Bannister
Principal and Managing Partner, Engtech Industries Inc.

Ken Bannister is an internationally renowned expert, consultant and speaker in the field of asset maintenance and production engineering/operations management. He's a Mechanical Design Engineer who has worked on multi-faceted projects in Europe, Africa and throughout North and South America Ken is a highly accomplished design, project, plant, lubrication, and reliability engineer. For the past 20 years, he has worked as a change management professional, empowering the asset management industry to tap into their "people power" to improve asset availability, reliability, and energy efficiency.

Ken is an accomplished author with four books and has written close to 300 white papers and magazine articles on all aspects of asset management. Two new books on industrial energy efficiency and the impact of asset management on cross-enterprise business issues are currently being worked on. He's an associate editor and columnist for five magazines that include the prestigious Plant Engineering and Maintenance (PEM) and Maintenance Technology and magazines. Ken currently works as a principal consultant and managing partner for Ontario-based Engtech Industries Inc., an industrial operations and maintenance management consulting firm.

David Berger, Moderator

David Berger, P.Eng. (Alta.) is the founding president of the Plant Engineering and Maintenance Association of Canada (PEMAC). He's also North America's number one expert on computerized maintenance management software (CMMS) systems and plant operations, and a frequent contributor to leading industry journals. David works with Western Management Consultants.

Keith Berriman, P.Eng., CMRP
Services Manager, Agrium Inc.

Keith Berriman is Services Manager for Agrium Inc.’s Redwater and Fort Saskatchewan Fertilizer Operations, with responsibility for the central planning and scheduling department, purchasing, loadout and mobile equipment. A certified RCM II facilitator he has worked as a reliability specialist, maintenance manager, maintenance planner, project engineer and operator in the chemical, hazardous waste and forest products industries. Keith brings 20 years of experience to maintenance management, reliability improvement programs, failure analysis and PM optimization. He graduated with a B.Eng in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Sheffield, England, and is a Professional Engineer registered in Alberta. Keith is also a Certified Maintenance And Reliability Specialist (CMRP) with the Society of Maintenance and Reliability Engineers (SMRP).

Jean-Robert Claveau
Director, Reliability, Rio Tinto Alcan

Jean-Robert Claveau is a professional engineer and holds a Masters in Applied Sciences (Thermodynamics) and a Masters in Administration. He has 29 years experience with Rio Tinto Alcan in Maintenance, Engineering, Operations, and TPM over three continents (Canada, Australia, France) and as many companies related to Alcan. For the first part of his career, Claveau was a practitioner holding technical roles ranging from field Maintenance Engineer to Plant Chief Engineer in Maintenance, Engineering and Operations. He has held managerial positions for the last 20 years. Claveau has managed organizations of up to 950 people (including 200 contractors) directly reporting to him, working with budgets of up to $120 million.

Claveau has been a fervent promoter of Asset Reliability and TPM for more than 15 years. In addition to line Management roles, he has frequently been required to assist as Senior Consultant at other sites around the world.

His current role aims at implementing required Best Practices in order to improve Asset Reliability across all of Rio Tinto Alcan’s sites.

Ken began his maintenance career in 1978 in Brooks, AB. He has been with Petro-Canada for approximately 20 years. In his present position, Ken is maintenance and projects execution lead with Petro-Canada FPSO (floating, production, storage and offloading) based in St. John's, Nfld.

Shawn Crawford Shawn Crawford
Director, Asset Management Services
Regional Municipality of Halton, Ontario

Shawn Crawford is the Director, Asset Management Services for the Regional Municipality of Halton, Ontario, where he provides leadership in the development and management of Halton Region's facilities and related assets, as well as the management of the Regional fleet through the continued development of strategies that lead to effective and efficient solutions. His experience in strategic planning, goal setting and delivery of programs, as well as experience in the development and implementation of service philosophies, while recognizing the ever-changing business environment, had lead to success in leading change efforts by transforming organizations into high-performance environments.

Shawn continues to leverage his proven experience of increasing responsibilities and demonstrated professional success through the leadership and management of a wide range of complex business activities in facilities management, planning, project management and property management within the government sector. Through a broad understanding of issues facing various levels of government, as well as the ability to work effectively with all constituency groups, he demonstrates through the implementation of performance management strategies improved customer satisfaction by creating a "culture of commitment" that has increased productivity and achieved business objectives.

Prior to joining the Halton Region, Shawn grew his skills in the field of facilities management, while working for the City of Mississauga. He established and began working with the Government of Ontario where he further developed his skills in the maintenance and operations of multi-story, multi-building facilities.

Roger Davies
President, The Da-trol Group Inc.

Roger Davies has an engineering background and has been active in Maintenance Management since 1982.  For over 20 years he has been President of The Da-trol Group Inc. which focuses entirely in this maintenance arena. 

Da-trol supports organizations in various ways from CMMS selection through to on-site implementation and optimization.  Their roles include Consultant, Project Manager, data collection/entry and CMMS sales.  Da-trol customers span North America from Vancouver to Halifax and Inuvik to San Diego. 

Mr. Davies is an international speaker and has presented at maintenance conferences in Canada, the U.S.A. and England.  He is also an active, certified instructor for (PEMAC) Plant Engineering & Maintenance Association of Canada.

Brian Ellis
Senior Business Systems Analyst, Nexen Inc.

Over 25 years of combined experience in maintenance and systems in upstream oil and gas, fertilizer, and mining industries as a tradesman, planner, business analyst, and PEMAC MMP instructor. Brian is employed at Nexen Inc. as a senior business systems analyst and his current areas of focus are: supporting end users, implementing enhancements, data integrity, and advising maintenance managers on system and business process improvements.

Amin Elsherif, P.Eng., MMP
Manager, Reliability Engineering, Site Wide Services
Suncor Energy Inc.

Amin Elsherif is a Professional Engineer, Mechanical Engineering with a M.Sc. in Computerized Reliability and Maintainability in Mechanical System Design. He's also a Maintenance Management Professional (MMP) with 17 years of experience in the oil and gas industries. He started his career with Shell, then joined CALTEX (Chevron & Texaco), and is currently working with Suncor Energy Inc. as a Reliability Engineering Manager. He has held leadership roles in different departments, such as maintenance, turnaround, planning and scheduling and reliability engineering.

Ray Floyd
Senior Vice President, Suncor Energy Inc.

Ray Floyd joined Suncor Energy in June, 2008 as senior vice president – maintenance and projects.

Before joining Suncor, Ray retired from Exxon Mobil Corporation where he had spent more than twenty years in senior leadership roles, most recently serving as Global Manager Manufacturing Services. Prior to joining Exxon he had spent more than ten years in technical and managerial roles with General Motors Corporation. Ray also served as Chairman of Energy Capital Credit Union, a financial institution associated with Exxon Mobil.

Ray has a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, a Master’s degree in Business Administration and a Juris Doctor degree in law. In the United States, Ray is licensed as a Registered Engineer, Attorney-at-law and Patent Attorney.

Organizations that Ray has led have received the UK “Queen’s Award for Export Achievement”, The “Shingo Prize for Manufacturing Excellence”, the Industry Week Magazine designation as one of “America’s Ten Best Plants” and the Maintenance Technology Magazine designation as “Best Maintenance Organization in Large Industry.” Ray is the only person to lead teams to receive the designation as one of America’s Best Plants in both discrete manufacturing and liquid operations.

Ray is author of two books A Culture of Rapid Improvement: Creating and Sustaining an Engaged Workforce (2008) and Liquid Lean: Lean Manufacturing for the Chemical and Process Industries (2009).

Darren German
Hydraulics Business Unit Service Manager, Bosch Rexroth Canada

Darren German was the Content Chairperson for MainTrain 2006 and served as the content co-chairperson of MainTrain 2005. Darren is the hydraulics business unit Service Manager for Welland, ON based Bosch Rexroth Canada. Darren has 17 years of hydraulic service experience specializing in, Hydraulic system Pdm, PM program optimization, troubleshooting, and technical assistance. Darren is a member of the Canadian Fluid Power Association and Plant Engineering Association of Canada.

Rod Griffiths
Maintenance Supervisor, National Research Council Canada – Institute for Ocean Technology

Rod has enjoyed a very successful career of 21 years in various maintenance, engineering and management capacities and for the past 5 years has been the Maintenance Supervisor and Chief Engineer responsible for the maintenance and operation of the architectural envelope of the National Research Council’s Institute for Ocean Technology in addition to the responsibility of project manager for major projects for NRC.

Kevin Hawco

Kevin Hawco has more than 28 years of financial, business and management experience in the oil and gas industry. Kevin received his Bachelor of Commerce degree from Memorial University in St. John’s, Nfld. He has held senior management roles in major oil and gas companies, and has experience in both oil and gas and development operations. Jim Henry

Jim Henry is a Global Industry Specialist in the Hydrocarbon Processing Industry/Oil & Gas Industrial Segment for SKF. He has been a Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional through the SMRP organization since 2002 and is Level 1 RBI certified through the Tischuk International organization. Mr. Henry has been promoting solutions to industrial maintenance organizations for 13 years. Past areas of experience include inventory optimization, repairable asset control, Enterprise Asset Management software applications, as well as equipment and process optimization consulting services.

Jody Hood, P. Eng.
Rotating Equipment Team Leader, Suncor Energy

Jody Hood is currently the Rotating Equipment Team Leader for Suncor Energy in their Western Canada Natural Gas theatre of operations.

A Mechanical Engineering graduate of the University of Saskatchewan, Jody has worked in the natural gas business as a Rotating Equipment Specialist and as a plant Operations Support Engineer for the past 12 years.

His Rotating Equipment experience has ranged geographically from south western Saskatchewan, across Alberta, to north eastern British Columbia. He has enjoyed the opportunity to work with a wide variety of reciprocating and centrifugal compressors, pumps, reciprocating engines, electric motors, and gas and steam turbines. Although the bulk of his work is focused on direct support of operations and maintenance groups, he is also the technical lead for the rotating equipment standards used in purchasing new equipment.

As a plant Engineer he worked at a sour gas plant in the Alberta, supporting maintenance and operations as required and managing small capital projects.

Kim Hunt MMP, CMRP
Reliability Manager, Domtar Espanola

Kim Hunt is the Reliability Manager at Domtar's Pulp and Paper Mill in Espanola, Ontario (Canada). She draws on 14 years of experience in the Maintenance and Reliability field, specializing in lubrication, planning, predictive tools, CMMS implementation and the development and implementation of the condition based asset management program (referred to as "RDM" – Reliability Driven Maintenance).

Domtar (Espanola) uses the Ivara process as their "vehicle for change" and the Ivara software as the "tool" to support the new reliability program. Previously, Kim played a key role in planning and "rolling out" SAP's maintenance module for sawmills in Domtar's Wood Products division.Kim believes that leadership, commitment, teamwork and persistence are key to Domtar successfully weathering the challenging market conditions.

Kim Jessiman
Regional Leasing, Eastern Health of Newfoundland and Labrador

Kim’s introduction to Maintenance and Physical Asset Management began in Logistical and Maintenance Support for the Royal Air Force supporting GR1 Fighter Aircraft and Westland Wessex Helicopters in several different countries. A graduate of PEMAC’s MMP program, Kim is now part of the Facilities Management team of Eastern Health supporting the day to day management of 53 sites across Newfoundland and Labrador.

Alan Johnson
Consultant, Physical Asset Management, Clearpass Inc.

Alan has over 20 years of experience as a journeyman tradesman and supervisor in maintenance, operations, and construction in oil and gas production and processing. During his 14 years as a consultant, his clients have included: forest products and pulp and paper operations, fertilizer production, mining, oil and gas producers and a number of other process industries. His primary areas of focus have been; assessment of asset management program effectiveness and CMMS utilization, as well as aiding clients in the development and implementation of improvement strategies and action plans in both areas.

Implementation assistance activities have included: conducting workshops and providing on site mentoring in maintenance work management, providing assistance with planned maintenance (preventive, predictive, proactive) program development and utilization of CMMS tools to support planned maintenance activities. Alan is Vice-President, Alberta Chapter PEMAC (Plant Engineering and Maintenance Association of Canada).

Anthony Jones
Maintenance Supervisor, Newfoundland/Labrador Hydro

In addition to his successful and seasoned background of over 35 years in the electrical profession as a Journeyman Electrician, Certified Marine Electrical Technician and Journeyman Power System Operator, Anthony is a graduate of the PEMAC MMP Certification Program and also holds a Masters Certificate in Project Management. He has gained extensive experience in major projects in Fort McMurray, St. John’s and in the Northwest Territories. In his current capacity as a Maintenance Supervisor for NL Hydro, Anthony is responsible for Buildings and Transportation. Over the past 15 years, Anthony has also owned Tony’s Electrical Contracting, a registered electrical contracting company in the St. John’s area.

Ryan Jones
System Operations Coordinator, Regional Municipality of Halton

Ryan has 6 years of Municipal experience with an educational and practical background in GIS. Ryan spent 4 years in the Infrastructure Management Group in a GIS Coordinator role before coming to System Operations where he provides day-to-day technical support to the field staff and Management as well as assists with various maintenance activities and programs. 

Ryan's role within the CMMS project has been as the subject matter expert within System Operations in leading the mobility and GIS components of the implementation. This includes; defining mobility requirements, selecting vendors and co-ordinating the rollout of the GPS units, Toughbooks, truck mounts and wireless solution. He is the front-line support to field staff and liaison to IT for all mobile components.

Paul Kristensen
Maintenance Manager, AltaSteel

Paul Kristensen is the Maintenance Manager for AltaSteel, part of the SCAW Metals Group of companies based in South African.  He joined AltaSteel in November 2008 and is currently leading the Maintenance Department (and organization) in implementing a Proactive Maintenance Initiative (PMI) designed to transform business operations from reactive to proactive maintenance.

Paul’s presentation will highlight the change management journey involved with transforming a 54 year old steel ‘mini-mill’ from a traditional ‘breakdown’  culture to one striving to achieve best-in-class performance in a very competitive market place.

Paul has 19 years of varied plant maintenance experience working in all aspects of asset management.  Paul is a Mechanical Engineer, receiving his B.Sc. from the University of Alberta.

John Lambert

Andy Mackintosh

Andy Mackintosh has more than 25 years of international experience predominantly in oil and gas across Europe, Southeast Asia and North America. He started his career as a mechanical and production engineer with McDermott Inc. and holds a Master of Science degree from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. Andy has held a number of executive positions at director and managing director levels internationally. He recently spearheaded Transfield Services' expansion into North America where he previously held the position of Executive General Manager for Asia and North America prior to assuming the role of President and CEO for FT Services in October 2006. He led FT Services through initiation and significant growth including the successful bid of a C$1.1 billion contract with Suncor Energy Inc. in Alberta, Canada. Brian Malloch
PEMAC President

Brian has enjoyed a career of over 30 years in numerous Canadian industry sectors in several capacities, such as implementing and managing lean production initiatives, plant management, facilities and production maintenance management and plant engineering management. He has achieved global recognition for his accomplishments in physical asset management and lean production system developments. Brian is a well-recognized leader in physical asset management and is often a presenter at global conferences and seminars. He has also been featured in numerous articles in various publications including a cover story as a "Maintenance Master" in PEM magazine. Brian is President of the Plant Engineering and Maintenance Association of Canada (PEMAC) and participates on the Steering Committee of MainTrain 2008—Canada's premier conference for physical asset management.

He has chaired the PEMAC Professional Development Committee and continues to participate in many of PEMAC's professional development initiatives with Canada's colleges of applied science and technology in support of the MMP (Maintenance Management Professional) certification program. Brian has enjoyed numerous professional accomplishments, including receiving PEMAC's 2002 Annual Sergio Guy Memorial Award that honoured his significant contributions to the maintenance and plant engineering profession in Canada. Hugues Martel

Hugues Martel is originally from France and has a master's degree in engineering. Kendal Martens, P.Eng
Wastewater Treatment Maintenance Planning Leader
Water Services, The City of Calgary

Kendal has worked at the City of Calgary for over 15 years all in the operations and maintenance of wastewater treatment facilities.  His current role involves leading the Maintenance Planning group responsible for planning, coordinating, and scheduling operations and maintenance work activities for the Wastewater Treatment Plants.  The main functions this group provides include: asset inventory and specification information, support for the operation and utilization of the Work and Asset Management application, enhancing the reliability of the plant operation, Best Practice Guidelines, Repair vs Replace Decision Strategy, Material Management Strategy, Regional Shutdown and Turnaround Program, Preventive Maintenance Program, Predictive Maintenance Technology, Asset Management Strategy, and Life cycle asset profiling and rehabilitation program.

He brings a wide array of experience in planning, coordination and scheduling, maintenance management, CMMS operations, and asset management and has been involved in various initiatives including: preventive maintenance optimization, CMMS implementations, work management business process development, management report development, mentoring, and asset management best practices.

Serge Mathieu
Operation Management, Manager,

Automation Technologies Division, Canada ABB Inc.

Serge Mathieu has over 30 years of experience in strategic planning, operations and maintenance management, as well as re-engineering of organizations, negotiating collective agreements, improving plant reliability and culture change. Rising through key management positions from a maintenance mechanic in 1970, he has held several senior management positions in both the private and public sectors.

Since 2001, Serge has been responsible for Operation Management of ABB Reliability Consulting Services Canada. He has delivered with success many benchmarking and total plant reliability projects, as well as supervising WCR benchmark audits in various types of industries. In 1994, he joined Montreal Urban Transit Commission until April 2001 when he left as Executive director, Bus Network.

From 1984 to 1994, Serge was president founder of a consulting firm specializing in maintenance training, organizational diagnostic and implementation of CMMS for maintenance in manufacturing, fleet and building. From 1979 to 1997, he was a lecturer at "École de Technologie Supérieure" instructing industrial maintenance management" and reliability and maintenance courses. Lastly, he founded and chaired the Quebec Association of Manufacturers and Exporters.

Robert A. (Bob) McLeod, CD, P.Eng.
General Manager Construction, ATCO Structures and Logistics Ltd.

A graduate of the University of New Brunswick and the Royal Military College of Science (UK), Bob joined the ATCO Frontec Europe facilities and equipment maintenance contract with NATO in Kabul in 2006 after 35 years experience with the Canadian Forces, the United Nations, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and Canadian mining and oil companies, in North America, Eastern and Western Europe, east, west and south Africa and Asia. Bob’s most recent experience in facility maintenance and management under austere conditions with long supply lines included diamond mining in Guinea, construction, reconstruction and facility maintenance in Kosovo and Sudan, Kabul, Kandahar and in the oil sands north of Fort McMurray. Bob is currently General Manager of Construction with ATCO Frontec Corporation in Calgary where he is responsible for planning, organising, and leading the full range of ATCO Structures and Logistics construction activities and continues to project manage smaller ATCO Structures and Logistics international projects including logistic support to the Unmanned Airborne Vehicle project in Kandahar.

Jim McNeill
Thermal Plant Operator, Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro Holyrood Generating Station

Jim McNeil is a graduate of Mechanical Engineering Technology and is a  Certified Mechanical Engineering Technologist Mechanical with both Mechanical and Power designations and has further obtained his 1st Class Power Engineering Certificate.  Although currently working as a Thermal Plant Operator for Newfoundland/Labrador Hydro, his vast experience comes from both the automotive and food process industries in Ontario. Jim is also a graduate of the PEMAC MMP Certification Program.

Len Middleton
President, Asset Management Solutions

Leonard Middleton is an experienced international management consultant practicing in the field of physical asset management, with experience in maintenance management and management of capital projects. 

Leonard has over thirty years of professional practice in a range of industries, and has both a strong technical background and a good understanding of organizational financial and performance issues related to physical asset management practices.

Leonard is a frequent presenter on different Physical Asset Management topics, and provides training on the subject for clients.  As well, he has taught a number of PEMAC (Plant Engineering and Maintenance Association of Canada) MMP (Maintenance Management Professional) courses at Ontario community colleges.

Education includes B.A.Sc. (Engineering) from University of Windsor, and an M.B.A. from Schulich School of Business at York University. 

Professional designations includes: P. Eng. (Professional Engineer) from Professional Engineers of Ontario; and PMP (Project Management Professional) from Project Management Institute.

Sean Miller
Certified Level I Ultrasound Inspector, UE Systems, Inc.

Sean has been involved with ultrasound technology since 2005. He has lectured about the technology throughout Canada and has been instrumental in the program implementation of ultrasound for multiple companies. As a Certified Level I Ultrasound Inspector, he travels extensively supporting the implementation and ongoing ultrasound programs for UE Systems operations in Canada.

Shelley Moffat, PMP
Regional Municipality of Halton

Shelley has over 22 years of combined IT and Municipal experience and has been with the Region of Halton for 10 years working in both the Planning & Public Works and Technology Services departments. Her focus has been in software development, hardware co-ordination, and managing of IT projects within System Operations.

Shelley accepted the position of CMMS Specialist within System Operations in 2005 to lead the CMMS project from business process re-engineering, system analysis & design through to vendor selection and implementation.

She is a certified Project Management Professional with the Project Management Institute.

Dr. Murray has been at the forefront of the development of Condition Monitoring and its application in the oil and gas industry for 25 years. He was the founder of Development Engineering International  Ltd (DEI), Aberdeen (Scotland), which  was acquired by SKF in 1999.  A consultancy company, DEI. became SKF Asset Management Services in 2006. Today the company provides reliability management services in more than 90 North Sea offshore platforms and gas installations. Dr Murray has a particular interest in the use of risk-based approaches to develop business focused maintenance strategies. When DEI became part of the SKF Group in 1999, Dr Murray took on a role aimed at building SKF's activities within the oil and gas sector globally. Whilst he is based in Aberdeen, Scotland, Dr Murray spends a significant amount of time travelling throughout the world. Dr Murray has a mechanical engineering degree from Glasgow University and a PhD from Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh. He is now in charge of research and development for SKF Reliability Systems.

Barry Nelson

Barry Nelson is a part Owner of PRACTICAL MANAGEMENT OF CANADA INC. based in Toronto, and oversees its activities. Richard (Dick) H. Olver, P. Eng. CMRP
Senior Asset Reliability Specialist, Agrium Inc.

Dick has held many maintenance and operation positions in mining, metals refining, and the manufacture of bulk fertilizers. He also has managed a variety of system and CMMS implementations, including the introduction and upgrading of SAP for Agrium. Currently, he's the Senior Asset Reliability Specialist leading the Agrium asset management improvement work. Dick has spoken on maintenance and reliability topics at a number of conferences, including the SMRP annual meeting, Canadian Institute Maintenance Conference, the SAP-Centric EAM and EuroMaintenance 2006. He's chairman of the SMRP best practices team and has made a presentation on behalf of the team. Dick is Treasurer, PEMAC (Plant Engineering and Maintenance Association of Canada) Alberta Chapter.

Evert has enjoyed a successful career that began in skilled trades as a millwright and progressed to his current position as Maintenance Supervisor in the food processing industry. Alan D. Quilley, CRSP

Alan is the President and owner of Safety Results Ltd., Sherwood Park, Alberta. He's a Canadian Registered Safety Professional who has worked in the health and safety field for over three decades.

Alan holds related certificates in health and safety from both the University of Alberta and the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. Ben Rauman

Paul Specht
Director of Buildings and Facilities Maintenance with the City of Edmonton

Paul Specht enjoyed a 20 year career with the Canadian Forces where he held a number of engineering positions including with the United Nations in Cyprus and several large Canadian military bases.  He continued to develop his asset management expertise with positions at two Ontario universities and since 2006 with the City of Edmonton. 

Current challenges center on a major business process improvement initiative related to the use of SAP, as well as the development of processes enhancing deferred maintenance and capital project planning.

Bob Taylor
CEO, Neucel Specialty Chemicals

Bob Taylor is currently CEO of Neucel Specialty Chemicals – a dissolving pulp producer based in Vancouver, B.C., which supplies specialty pulp grades to a wide variety of end users, including cellulose acetate, ethers, nitrates, rayon staple, and viscose filament producers. Improving the reliability of the manufacturing process for dissolving pulp is a key priority of Neucel.

Prior to that, Bob served in several manufacturing leadership positions encompassing several different pulp and paper businesses during a 23-year career with International Paper Company, finishing as Vice-President of Manufacturing Systems for the Printing and Communications Division in 2003.

Bob served several years on the national executive committee of PIMA as well as the PIMA Board of Directors and was also an active Member of their Reliability committee.

Bob has a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of New Brunswick, Canada and currently resides in Port Alice, BC.
